RS Tera Eastern Region - First Winter Training Weekend

Thorpe Bay Yacht Club
Lynn Bew

19 October 2021

Twenty-one sailors, from eight clubs arrived at Thorpe Bay Yacht Club early Saturday morning, excited to start the first of their five winter training weekends. Jonathan Lewis taking the helm of the coaching team, there was certainly a few funny stories to be heard.

After a foggy start, the sun came out on Saturday morning but there was no wind or water! Breakfast was served in the club house followed by introductions, a little bit of theory and a warm-up while the coaches and sailors patiently waited on the tide and a little bit of breeze to fill in. A quick lunch before heading out onto the water to focus on a windward leeward course for the afternoon, allowing the coaches the opportunity to assess the newly formed group of sailors.

Sunday’s training focused on the question ‘what’s wrong with my boat?’ After a morning of theory, the afternoon was focused on controlling the speed of your boat, mark rounding’s and then finished with a couple of short races to complete the weekend.

A few comments from the sailors……

Sophia: I was quite apprehensive at the start as I’m not very experienced, but the coaches made it really fun and gave me lots of encouragement and I didn’t finish last in every race! It was really nice that Andras and Mark were there as they have both taught me from my first time in a boat and that put me at ease. I learnt so much including the Superman technique. PS Jonathan’s really funny as well

Carter: It was fun and interesting. The coaches were excellent at explaining, helpful and encouraging. Don’t turn the tiller too much as it becomes a break. I learnt a lot including slippage, Jonathan’s favourite word.

Florence said: I remember the word “slippage”! Meeting up with everyone is great. Jonathan is a good teacher and he’s funny. I’m looking forward to doing the end of the season and the next training session.

From Gabriel: I liked the instructors, particularly Jonathan, and I feel I have learned a lot already in the first weekend. It was really nice to sail with so many other Teras. I enjoyed it a lot and I’m looking forward to the next training session

From Daisy: I really enjoy the training sessions as I gets to make new friends from other clubs and feels like I have come away learning lots of new things each time. I am looking forward to Brightlingsea

Thank you to Thorpe Bay Yacht Club for hosting this weekend, your hospitality was incredible, and we look forward to returning next year.

Best of luck to all the Eastern sailors taking part in the RS Tera End of Seasons and we are looking forward to our next weekend at Brightlingsea Sailing Club in November.
